Bolsonaro taken into custody after being deemed a risk of fleeing

The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was sentenced of plotting a government overthrow in last fall and given more than over two decades in jail, but he was staying under house arrest pending appeals.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a preventative measure after fresh information came to light.

This encompassed trying to remove his tracking device and a call for a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a possible escape.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a document approving the arrest, the judge said intelligence from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.

The senator wrote on online platforms on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your settee? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the gathering would be so supporters could "pray for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the potential of Bolsonaro's transfer to diplomatic missions near the dwelling, considering that the investigations revealed a history of arranging to request asylum through a consular facility", a declaration said.

The legal document emphasizes that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, the capital city, is located around 8 miles from his dwelling.

Global Responses

Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist US President Trump, leading him to impose a half-rate duty on imports of Brazilian goods.

Bolsonaro is being detained in a Federal Police station in Brazil's capital city and will experience a detention review on Sunday.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with digital surveillance.

They also requested that he be permitted to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he needed frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other illnesses.

Background on Conviction

Bolsonaro was found guilty of leading a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plan which included plans to kill his opponent and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the military leaders. The current president was sworn in without problem on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on the eighth of January, many his backers attacked and damaged public facilities in the capital, the capital city.

The law enforcement took action and around 1,500 people were taken into custody.

The justices found that the rioters had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, bring back stability and bring him back to power.

At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.

He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him running in the next presidential race.
